Leah & Louise: Charlotte, NC

Welcome back to Brunch in the Summertime! The blog is back and better. Thank you for being patient as I adjusted to some new and exciting changes in my life. There have also been some updates to the website. All older blog posts are now in the Archives tab.

For this week’s brunch, I visited Leah & Louise located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Leah & Louise is a black owned restaurant that opened in the summer of 2020. They specialize in Southern dishes with a modern interpretation. The restaurant is located in the up and coming Camp North End area of the city. Leah & Louise serves brunch on Saturdays from 11 AM - 2:30 PM and Sundays from 11 AM - 3:30 PM.

My Order:

  • Bluff City Classic (SP biscuit, fried chicken breast, spicy plum ketchup)

    • Modifications: I added a fried egg cooked over medium.

  • Fro-tatoes

Review:

This was the perfect place for me to get back into brunching and blogging. I had a great experience at Leah & Louise. They are extremely busy on Saturdays which is a sign of a quality restaurant. The wait time was about 30 minutes, but the Camp North End area is a cool place to walk around while you wait.

The inside of Leah & Louise is very aesthetically pleasing. The restaurant has high industrial-style ceilings and large garage windows that they probably open up in the warmer months. There is a lot of natural wood accents and exposed brick. Immediately when you walk in, you see a full bar and a sneak peek into the kitchen.

We sat at the bar for our meal and the bartender was super friendly. She gave us a rundown of the menu and also a little background on the owners and the start of the restaurant. The owners are a young, Black married couple: the husband is a renowned chef and the wife is the brains behind the interior decorating. Sounds like a dream team to me!

I had some other things to do after brunch, so I did not make it a boozy brunch but their drink menu looked very good. I am already planning to go back to try them. For food, I ordered the Bluff City Classic and Fro-tatoes. The brunch menu is not very extensive, but it is unique. Leah & Louise puts their own spin on Southern classics, so you won’t find anything like it elsewhere.

On paper, the Bluff City Classic sounds like a regular fried chicken biscuit, but that spicy plum ketchup gives it a smokey barbecue flavor that took it up a notch. The biscuit was fluffy and moist, chicken cooked perfectly, and the fried egg added more texture. I also ordered the Fro-tatoes, a mix of a hushpuppy and a tater tot. They were not my favorite because I am not a fan of hushpuppies but if you are a fan, definitely try them!

Overall, the food was amazing and the aesthetic was a vibe. I would highly recommend Leah & Louise if you are ever in Charlotte.
